August is finally here! The roads are clearing out, sidewalks are opening up, and we are all trying to soak up and enjoy this last month of summer. If you’re not lounging on the beach or out of town with the family, have fun close to home at some great events put on Catalogue nonprofits! 5th Annual Basil Bonanza

BRING ON THE BASIL! Our family fiesta is free, we only ask that you bring your most delicious, most amazing basil-themed dish to share. Just a few things to remember: – Stop by Marion St. Garden during our open times (Tuesday 5-7pm, Thursday 5-7pm, Saturday 4-6pm) and pick up some basil for your dish! – Bring dessert, appetizers, drinks, whatever, as long as it can be shared with 5-8 people. – GET CREATIVE! We would love to see some basil-rific dishes that have never been created before.

Evita — Presented by the Musical Theatre Institute for Teens

This Tony Award-winning musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber (creators of Jesus Christ Superstar) explores the rise and fall of Eva Peron, the controversial second wife of Argentine president Juan Pern. Born in poverty, she learned how to seduce and survive, and eventually became both a powerful leader and a hero to the poor and working classes. Women Build

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland
Interested in volunteering on our Maple Hill construction site to support Women Build Register below –there are only 20 slots available and they will be given on a first-come-first-served basis. This event is to support our Women Build efforts to partially sponsor a home in the Maple Hill community. We are suggesting a donation of $50 per person which will go directly toward the project. You can either send a check prior to the build day to 9110 Gaither Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 or place your donation online at: https://share.habitat.org/maple-hill-women-build. Feel free to use our fundraising page to raise extra funds to support this amazing cause! This is a great opportunity to network with other like-minded women in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties while transforming the lives of deserving families.

Volunteer Info: Please remember that ALL volunteers must wear hard-soled boots or shoes, such as hiking boots. Shoes with lug soles are required due to site conditions. Gym shoes, open-toed shoes, sandals and high heels are not permitted. You will be sent home if you do not have proper shoes. No exceptions can be made. Your safety is paramount. Please wear long pants made of sturdy material, such as JEANS. Leggings, yoga pants and pants that do not cover your ankles are not acceptable. You will be sent home if you do not wear proper pants. No exceptions can be made. Your safety is paramount. Please remember to bring your lunch. We will break for lunch at 11:30, and we ask that you are prepared to eat your lunch on site. In the event of inclement weather, please call the construction hotline at 301-910-6597 for information regarding build day status. The hotline will be updated by 7am. All volunteers are REQUIRED to use the appropriate safety equipment as instructed by Habitat’s construction staff and Crew Leaders (including, but not limited to hard hats and safety goggles) and wear closed toed shoes. HFH-MC will provide this equipment but you may bring your own if you prefer. All volunteers must be at least 18 to be on the construction site. Creating an account within this system allows us to decrease paperwork and keep electronic files of your waiver acceptance.

Family Garden Day @ Washington Youth Garden

Washington Youth Garden, Friends of the National Arboretum
Family Garden Days is an interactive family gardening, nutrition education, and cooking program. It is designed to bring families together at the Washington Youth Garden to share in a communal experience of learning how to grow and prepare fruits and vegetables, maintain an organic garden, and prepare healthy meals. Tailored to beginning gardeners and those looking to enhance their food and wellness practices, the program is an exciting opportunity for families to grow awareness, appreciation and connections to their food sources and engage in healthy life affirming outdoor activities! Participating families harvest fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden for cooking demos as well as to prepare and enjoy at home.

Hike Rock Creek — with Rock Creek Conservancy

Our Daily Bread Back to School Supply Sorting

Our Daily Bread
Our Daily Bread’s Back to School Collect for Kids Program is collecting donations of funds, backpacks and scientific calculators this summer to help 2,000 needy children in the Fairfax and JEB Stuart High School pyramids go back to school this fall with everything they need for the school year. We are using the funds to purchase thousands of school supplies at a steep discount. These supplies are scheduled to arrive at our distribution location at Oak View Elementary on August 11. We will need some volunteer assistance on Aug. 12 through 14 to sort and package up supplies for the various schools who will receive the supplies to distribute to their kids this fall.
