Family Friendly Warehouse Volunteering

DC Diaper Bank
Come help us in the warehouse! Volunteering is family friendly and all are welcome whether it’s for one hour or four. We’ll be sorting and packing diapers and even little hands can help with that (or just play in the play area!). Our Volunteer Dates are a great way to starting talking about giving back and community in a very tangible way that kids can relate to well.

Professional Attire Collection Day

Suited for Change
Join Suited for Change as we receive large clothing donations of spring & summer clothes. Our suiting program provides professional attire, shoes and matching accessories to low-income women who are entering the job market or who have recently started a new job. Clients meet one-on-one with trained volunteers, also known as “wardrobe consultants,” who assist them in assembling a professional wardrobe.

Pool Chaperone with Horton’s Kids

Sunny and warm days mean our weekly Sunday field trips to the pool are back! We need a big group of volunteers in July to swim with the kids and help us keep them safe in the water!

When: Sun Jul 13 2014 (12:00 NOON – 3:30 PM)

Volunteer Info: Volunteers are needed to help chaperone our trips to the pool where you’ll swim with the kids, eat lunch and play out of the water. Schedule below: 12:00 pm: Meet at the top of the Capitol South Metro escalators for a ride on the HK bus to pick up the kids and drive to the pool. You can alternatively meet us at the pool. 12:45 pm: The HK bus arrives at the pool. Volunteers swim with the kids and help keep them safe. 2:30 pm: The kids eat lunch and play at the park next to the pool. 3:30 pm: The bus takes the kids home and drops off the volunteers back at Cap South.

Horror Classics: The Black Cat

Joe’s hosts a series of cool thrillers 7:30 pm on Mondays in July that show incredible photographer, intense acting, and real theatrics before the digital era. Renew your interest in these classic or discover them for the first time! This series is curated by Vernon Sears. Ticket price covers Sears’ introduction to each film and lead of a short discussion after each film. BYOP (Bring your own Popcorn!) The Black Cat (1941), loosely based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe of old rivals and enemies. Hjalmar Poelzig (Boris Karloff) and Dr. Vitus Werdegast (Bla Lugosi) meet seven years after the Great War (WWI) on the Hungarian battlefield where treachery fostered their final reckoning. This was the first American debut of gifted Czech director Edgar G. Ulmer.

Daytime CASA Volunteer Training

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)/Prince George’s County
Want to stand up for abused and neglected children in foster care? To become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) you must attend preservice training to learn how you can work with a child or youth in foster care and advocate in their best interest to have a positive and long-lasting impact. If you are free during daytime hours or if you have flexibility at work to take 6 days off this July, then this Pre-Service training is for you! We are looking for individuals who are ready to make the commitment to advocating for a youth in foster care. We will provide the free training, you bring the commitment to being an advocate for one youth in need. Once you have successfully completed our screening and training, we will match you with a child in Prince George’s County Foster Care. CASAs make a minimum one year commitment to advocating for their assigned child or youth. Volunteers spend about 10-15 hours each month meeting with their youth and communicating with other parties related to the child’s case. Applicants must be 21 or older by the time training is completed. Applications must be received by June 11th to be considered for Summer Training to ensure enough time for interviews and pre-screening. Lunch will be served at each training. During courtroom observation, attendees will be responsible for their own lunch.
