Around Town: February 12-13

Welcome to Friday, Greater Washington! We’ve got great events at our non-profits coming up …

Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (545 7th Street SE)

From 5:00-7:00 PM on Saturday, Capitol Hill Arts League will host a free opening reception for its juried all-media show; the juror is Janis Goodman, arts reviewer for PBS/WETA and Professor of Fine Art at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Can’t make it on Saturday? Check out the gallery hours here.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D Street NW)

In Oedipus El Rey, on stage at 8:00 PM on Saturday, MacArthur Genius Grant winner Luis Alfaro adapts the “mother” of all tragedies, setting this ultimate story of forbidden love amid the sizzling rhythms of the LA barrio. The show runs until March 6 and you can buy tickets here.

District of Columbia Arts Center (2438 18th Street NW)

Mash-Up Fest is back this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 PM! Four local playwrights present four original mash-up parodies — presented by Landless Theatre Company. And from 4:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, DCAC offers an introductory workshop on the principles practiced by Theatre Du Jour, for actors of all levels and types! Learn more right this way!

Potomac Conservancy (River Center at Lockhouse 8, 7906 Riverside Drive, Cabin John)

Help the Conservancy clean up and beautify the land and water surrounding Lock 8 and along the C&O Canal towpath. Part of the National Park Service’s Canal Stewards Program, this monthly clean-up day is open to all ages! Call for more info or directions: (301) 608-1188 x204.

(And remember to wish your loved ones a Happy Valentine’s Day on Monday! Looking for the right gift? Might I subtly suggest a Catalogue gift card …)
